Anna R.'s Story
Anna R. (Sutera) Newman, 81, beloved wife of the late Charles W. “Joe” Newman, Jr. of Gloucester, passed away suddenly at her home on Sunday, July 24th.
Born in the North End of Boston on April 19, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Frances (Gilardi) Sutera.
Anna attended grammar school in the North End and later graduated from St. Ann’s School with the Class of 1953.
As a young lady, Anna had been a cafeteria worker for Gloucester schools and later owned and operated the Coffee Galley on Pleasant Street. She then worked at O’Donnell-Usen and North Atlantic Seafoods before retiring.
Anna was very loving and devoted to her family. She was an excellent cook and was noted for delicious Italian cookies. Above all, she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Joanna Newman; her son, Charles “Chuck” Newman III; grandchildren, Nicole Anna Newman, Nathan Paul Newman; great-grandchildren, Michael, Charlotte Frances, Etta Jean; her brother Leonard Sutera and wife, Jean; brother-in-law, James Acciavatti; sister-in-law, Judy Sutera; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Joe, she was predeceased by her sisters, Lillian Sutera, Betty Acciavatti; and brother, Joseph Sutera.
Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Thursday, July 28, at 8:45 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Anthony’s Chapel by the Sea at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
