Antonina's Story

Text size

PALM BAY, FL - Antonina "Nina" (Lovasco) Brancaleone, 89, of Palm Bay, Fla., peacefully passed away on the evening of February 19, 2018, with her devoted daughter, Lucia, and son-in-law, Robert, by her side. Nina was born in Gloucester, Mass., to Gerolamo and Grace (Orlando) Lovasco on October 15, 1928. She married Antonino Brancaleone in October 1948. They had two children, Joseph Michael and Lucia. For many years, Nina took great pride living the life of a fisherman's (and a Captain's) wife. During those long stretches of having her husband away, Nina formed life long bonds with her friends and family especially her sister-in-law, Antonina, by spending a great deal of time with them and their children, while their husbands were away at sea. It was evident to anyone that knew Nina that she was fiercely devoted to being the best wife, mother, and grandmother that she could possibly be. Her children have often told stories of their wonderful childhood and spoke of a home filled with laughter and love. Her grandchildren have fond memories of Nina hosting holiday dinners with extended family; as well as the fun weekend sleepovers they had at their grandmother's house when they were young. Nina's family fondly recalls her delicious Italian meals and irresistible treats, such as her famous butterfly pastries and cuccidati cookies.
In 1988, Nina and her husband retired to Palm Bay, Fla., where they enjoyed spending time with their friends and family, traveling on cruises, and bowling in a league. They also continued to enjoy hosting their children and grandchildren as much as possible. Although, Nina loved living in sunny Florida, she often reminisced about her hometown of Gloucester. She had a deep love for her town and especially missed, in her own words, "the beautiful snow."
Nina was a kind soul with a wicked sense of humor. Many will miss her jokes and wit, her beautiful smile and her intense love of family.
Nina is survived by her "Little Sister," Vita (Lovasco) Santuccio, and "Baby Brother," Ambrose Lovasco and wife, Marlan; daughter, Lucia (Brancaleone) Duff and husband, Robert; daughter-in-law, Jeana (Quince) Brancaleone; grandchildren, Nina (Brancaleone) Azarian and husband, Charles, Joette (Brancaleone) Garcia and husband, Antony, Robert Duff and wife, Krista Froiseth, Krystyna (Duff) Grant and husband, David; six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her amazing caregivers, Pat Parker, Crystal Barber, and Harriet Wilson.
She was preceded by the love of her life, Antonino Brancaleone; her parents, Gerolamo and Grace Lovasco; beloved brothers, Salvatore (Sammy) Lovasco, Peter Lovasco, Carlo Lovasco; and her cherished son, Joseph Michael Brancaleone.
