Arthur M.'s Story
Arthur M. Landy, age 85 died Monday, October 2, 2017 at Masconomet Healthcare in Topsfield. He was husband of Gloria (Funchs) Landy. He was son of the late Arthur and Mary (Campbell) Landy.
Mr. Landy was born in Ossining, N.Y., attended Ossining High School, and graduated from Manhattan College in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and participated in the blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Commander.
In 1957, he became a group insurance sales representative for John Hancock Mutual Life. In 1966, he joined the Boston branch of the international insurance brokerage firm Johnson & Higgins, where he established its employee benefit plan consulting department. He retired as a senior vice president in 1994.
Arthur married the late Martha McGreenery, with whom he had twin sons, Tucker and Kenneth, and a daughter, Susan. In 1975, he married Gloria Henderson and became a beloved father to her children Susan and John. Arthur deeply loved his grandchildren, Tucker, Sheena, and Kendra Landy, Jimmy and Tommy Henderson; and Hannah, Michael, and Seamus Conlon. He encouraged their intellectual and athletic endeavors, and provided unconditional support. Arthur leaves two beloved sisters, Patricia McLaud of Groton, Mass., and Eileen O'Connor of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. Uncle "Bub" was always a champion for his nephews and nieces, Charlie, Tim, Tom, Rick, and Jim O'Connor, Judy, Sally, Martha, and Steve McLaud; and Amy Clancy, her husband, Joseph, and her sons Nicholas and Benjamin. Arthur cherished his close friendship with his sister-in-law, Suzanne and her husband, Dale.
Arthur loved Boston and Cape Ann. He served on Manchester-by-the-Sea's personnel board for six years. He was a regular for many years at Sunday Morning Brook Street Tennis, a lector at St. Peter's Church in Gloucester, a reader to the Low Vision Support Group at Gloucester Senior Center, and a volunteer at the Sawyer Adult Learning Center, where he assisted immigrants with English.
His funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 62 School St., Manchester-by-the-Sea, Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea.
