GLOUCESTER- Barbara Jean Somers, 71, beloved wife of Frank D. Somers of Gloucester, passed away on Tuesday morning, January 16, 2018 at the Lahey Medical Center, Burlington.
Born in Worcester on September 10, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Minnie (Bolivar) Cournoyer.
Barbara was a graduate of Worcester North High School and Worcester State College with a degree in Teaching. She began her teaching career at Elizabeth Street School in Worcester. Following her marriage to Frank in 1972, she went on to teach at the former Rockport Middle School and Eastern Avenue Middle School in Gloucester.
She later worked at O'Donnell-Usen Co. in quality control and then at Business Office Services in Gloucester as a manager for many years before retiring. After retirement, she worked part time at Easy Ship and Pack.
Barbara was well known as a very kind and loving lady. One of her greatest passions was her work as a volunteer for many years at the Red Cross in Peabody where she made many friends. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her husband Frank, she is survived by her daughter, Heather Gwyn and husband Bryan and their daughter, Somer of Woodstock, Va.; her sisters, Beverly Daigle and husband, Donald of Charlton, MA, Joyce Klarr and husband, John of FL, Donna Charbonneau and her husband, Eric of Rutland, MA, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Norma Porter.
A graveside service will be held in Beech Grove Cemetery, Rockport on Monday, January 22, at 1 p.m. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
