Barry W.'s Story
Barry W. McCarthy, 74, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, January 27, 2017, under the care of the compassionate staff of Massachusetts General Hospital ICU in Boston following a brief illness.
Barry was born in Cambridge, Mass., on October 2, 1942, to the late Francis P. and Rosalie J. (Barbanti) McCarthy. He was raised and educated in Arlington, graduating from Arlington High School in 1960. At Arlington High School he excelled in learning about electronics. Barry's interest in electronics, coupled with his enthusiasm for the latest technology, led him to spend much of his life working in high tech at Raytheon, Tektronics, and Houghton Mifflin, in addition to many of his own ventures. Over his career he took great pride in teaching others about technology. In retirement Barry spent a great deal of time caring for his grandchildren, frequently taking them for long walks, spending time with them in the pool, and helping them ride bikes.
Barry was happiest spending time with family and friends, going to the movies, boating, and swimming. Always a kid at heart, he brought joy and laughter to many in his lifetime and will be remembered for his good nature, curiosity, and storytelling.
A loving husband, proud father and cherished friend, Barry will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 49 years, Carol L. (Shanahan) McCarthy; his two loving sons and their spouses, James P. McCarthy and his wife, Kathleen of Somerville, Mass., and Michael T. McCarthy and his wife, Candice of Georgetown. He also leaves four grandchildren, Emily and Noah of Somerville and Declan and Colby of Georgetown, all of whom brought him great joy.
In addition to his parents, Barry was predeceased by his brother, John of Gloucester, Mass.; and leaves several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to a memorial service at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street in Gloucester, on Friday, March 10, 2017, at 9:30 a.m.
Family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Barry's name to Massachusetts General Hospital ICU at https://giving.massgeneral.org/donate/.
