GLOUCESTER: C. Doris (Porter) Russell, 100, passed away at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation on Sunday morning, September 6, 2015. She was the wife of the late Louis E. Russell, with whom she shared 71 years of marriage.

Born December 7, 1914, in Gloucester, she was the daughter of the late Ashby and Emma (West) Porter. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and attended Gloucester Public Schools. She was an avid golfer and was a great fan of the Red Sox. She loved going to the senior day care, playing bingo, and doing crafts.

Doris celebrated her 100th Birthday Party at the Gloucester House Restaurant on December 7, 2014, with her family and friends. She was so proud to have Senator Bruce E. Tarr and former Mayor Carolyn Kirk present to read proclamations from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the City of Gloucester. She also received commendations from President Barack Obama.

Her family writes that she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, who enjoyed all family celebrations.

She is survived by her two sons, Louis E. “Skip” Russell, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Gloucester, and Peter A. Russell and his wife, Sharon of Southern Pines, N.C; five grandchildren, Kim Binette and her husband, Stephen, Kris Munroe and her husband, Tyler, Eric Russell and his wife, Maria, Bryan Russell, Timothy Russell and his wife, Sharon; nine great-grandchildren, Kyle Curley and his wife, Laurie, Kristin Curley, Tyler Munroe, Kailey LaFlamme and her husband, Jonathan, Jake Munroe, Ryan, Sophie and Elizabeth Russell and Alex Binette; one great-great-grandson, Jonathan LaFlamme; a brother-in-law, Philip Russell; and many nieces and nephews. Doris is also survived by four step-grandchildren, Craig Oliver and his wife, Beth, Lisa Sweeney and her husband, David, Brian Wallins and his wife, Lauren, and Kim Friedman and her husband, David.

She was predeceased by her brother, Ashby Porter; sisters, Marjorie Hill and Dorothy Burbridge; and granddaughter, Kathy Orlando.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Doris’s funeral service on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester. Visitation period will be Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Beechbrook Cemetery, Essex Avenue/Route 133, West Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Rose Baker Senior Center, 6 Manuel F. Lewis, Gloucester, MA 01930, or to the Lanesville Congregational Church, 1120 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. A collation will follow graveside services at the Lanesville Congregational Parish Hall, 1120 Washington Street, Gloucester.
