Capt. Benjamin A. Chianciola DEDHAM: Benjamin Angelo “Capt. Ben” Chianciola, 92, died peacefully on Friday, November 27, 2015, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Dedham, Mass.

Ben was born in Gloucester on December 21, 1922, the son of late Giuseppe and Damiana (Sansone) Chianciola. Ben was predeceased by his sister, Maria. He grew up in Gloucester on Bellevue Avenue and attended the Collins School, Central Grammar School, and was a member of first graduating class from the current Gloucester High School, Class of 1941. In high school, he was a varsity letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He was one of four sophomores to play on the 1938 Class C Champion football team that traveled to Washington, D.C. He was inducted into the Gloucester High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

Following high school, Ben attended Dean Academy. He played football and baseball at Dean and graduated in 1942. He then attended and played football at Boston College. He left college to enlist in the Navy and served on an LST and LCI and was stationed in the Mediterranean and the Pacific during World War II. When he returned home, he joined his father to work on the family fishing trawler, the Serafina II, retiring in 1987. Ben was interviewed and featured in the 1977 Forbes Magazine article, Down to the Sea in Money. He was also featured in an article in Yankee Magazine titled, Don’t Let Your Son Go Shrimping, in 1984. After retiring from fishing, he worked for Shaw’s Supermarket for 19 years. Ben was an active member of Gloucester Fisheries Commission, the New England Fisheries Commission, the Gloucester Elks, being awarded the Elk of the Year in 1991, and was a past president of the Gloucester Marine Railways.

Ben is survived by his wife of 69 years, Phyllis (Walen) Chianciola; daughter, Regina Hussey and her husband, Peter of Needham and their children, Abigail McIntyre and Peter Hussey Jr.; son, Joseph Chianciola and his wife, Trudy of Lutz, Fla., and boys, Cory, Jared, and Brady Chianciola and Kyle Johnston; son, Gerald Chianciola and Beth Chianciola of Gloucester, and children, Ben Chianciola and Yeccel Rodriguez; his sister-in-law, Sally Sandstrum and her husband, Philip of The Villages, Fla., and their children, Eric and Craig Sandstrum and Lynnel Curry. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish on Wednesday, December 2, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. A visitation will be held prior to the Mass on Wednesday in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
