Carol Ann (Malonson) Smith

August 08, 1939 - July 31, 2018

Gloucester - Carol Ann (Malonson) Smith, 78, of Gloucester, passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, in Addison Gilbert Hospital. She is the wife of Ernest C. Smith with whom she shared 60 years of marriage.

While her passing leaves her loved ones devastated, they are proud of the strength and courage with which she faced bout after bout with cancer. After multiple surgeries, chemotherapies, medications, and radiation, there is relief in knowing that she has found peace.

Carol was born on August 8, 1939, in Ipswich, to the late Harold J and Mary (Brooks) Malonson of Essex. She attended Essex schools and Gloucester High School.

Along with Ernest, Carol was the co-owner of C & E Smith Shellfish, an independent wholesale shellfish company with an unwavering commitment to quality and high standards. Once featured in the culinary magazine Savour, C & E Smith had an impeccable reputation throughout the North Shore for over 20 years. Carol was also celebrated as the fastest clam shucker in the family, no doubt the result of the countless hours she spent alongside her family (parents, husband, sons, daughters-in-law) at the C&E Smith Shellfish shucking table.

Carol was a talented artist, an avid gardener and an accomplished chef. Her holiday meals were legendary throughout the family, and she made a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat. A devoted grandparent, Carol expertly babysat not one but two sets of twins. “Nana” rarely missed baseball and softball games, recitals and plays. While she was humble and understated in her own accomplishments, Carol found great pride in relishing in her grandchildren’s successes. When giving report of the game or show, she frequented the phrase, “She/he was the best player on the field/stage.”

In addition to her loving husband Ernest, Carol is survived by her three sons, David C. Smith and his wife Patricia of Gloucester; Michael J. Smith and his wife Lynda of Ipswich, and Jeremy G. Smith and his wife Moira of Gloucester; seven grandchildren, Randy Roberts and his wife Crystal of Gloucester, Courtney Rose and her husband Kyle of Gloucester; Wesley and Cassidy Smith of Ipswich; and Owen, Miles, and Ruby Smith of Gloucester; as well as five great-grandchildren, Logan and Aiden Roberts, Cole Tarbox, Ash and Juniper Rose; and her devoted bedside companions, Timmy and Auggie. She is also survived by her brother, Eugene Malonson of Essex.

Carol’s Graveside Service will be in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery, Linclon St., West Gloucester, on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s memory may be made to the Cape Ann Animal Aid 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930. For online condolences and register book please visit www.pikenewhall.com.
