North Andover, MA - Harmonious composition informed the life and art of Carolyn C. Winslow (Cush), 87, who passed away surrounded by family at her home on March 12, 2018. She attended Beaver Country Day School, Briarcliff College, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Montserrat College of Art, where she passionately pursued her natural talent for art and illustration. In 1952 she married Sears C. Winslow (Nick) and they made Manchester, Mass., their home for 52 years. Growing up a horse back rider she learned to love the passions of her husband; sailing, skiing and traveling. Many small and illustrated journals, can be found in her bookshelves chronicling her world travels with Nick. Publications showing her work include two volumes of the History of Fitchburg, cover designs and illustrations for Essex County Cooks, logo for the New England Ski Museum, annual family Christmas cards and numerous community projects. As well, she wrote and illustrated a children’s book, “Night Song.” In 1984, she launched Border Designs and illustrated photo calendars, a Blooming & Birthday calendar, and Christmas cards. Just three days before her death Cush approved with Pen & Inc., the 2019 calendar named, “Peaceable Kingdom,” which expresses her passion for nature.
Fitchburg held fond and rich memories of a father who she adored. They spent countless hours on Sunday mornings horseback riding, with a few of his 18 beloved hounds, somehow arriving home late, but just in time to miss the church service her mother expected them to attend. In 1940 at age 10 she was blessed, for the next four years, with two “almost sisters” from England through C.O.R.B (Children’s Overseas Reception Board), Ann and Dido. She stayed connected to them and their younger sister, Prue, throughout her life. Cush always had a bird book on the family’s Lazy-Susan kitchen table. In her beloved New Hampshire home she kept watch for spring black bears and their cubs crossing the field, an occasional moose near the pond or spring flowers blooming, often with her journal and pencil close at hand. Through playing the card game, Spite & Malice, with a group for over 30 years and her children and grandchildren, the family came to understand her strategic and competitive spirit. She was patient, loving, adventurous, artistic and strong.
In 2009, Cush and Nick moved to a small independent cottage at Edgewood in North Andover, where Cush created a beautiful home in a deeply caring community. She leaves her two daughters, Wende Beck and her husband, Tim of Norwich, Vt., Lili Winslow and Jim Weitz of Cambridge; her three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Anna Beck Bimba and her husband, Scott, their two sons, Jackson and Kingston, Sam Beck and his wife, Abby, and son, Asher; and Chris Beck; her sisters-in-law, Nancy J. Winslow of Manchester, Judith Winslow Walcott and Peter Anastas of Gloucester, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews and friends that loved her. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Sears C. Winslow; and her sons, Charles Todd Winslow and Bobby Winslow.
A celebration of her life will be held at Tupper Manor at Endicott College, Beverly, on June 1, 2018, at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Cush’s name to Montserrat College of Art, 23 Essex St., Beverly, MA 01915; Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, 113 Goodnow Road, Princeton, MA 01541.
