MARCO ISLAND, FL AND FORMERLY MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, MA: Charles V. McCarthy, 88, of Marco Island, Fla., and formerly of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., passed away on February 28.
Born on January 22, 1928, in Brighton, Mass., he was the son of Timothy and Catherine (Fitzgerald) McCarthy. He attended St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Mass. Upon graduation in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he trained as a pilot. After the war, he attended college on the GI Bill, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Class of 1953. He began his career in computers at the Naval Supersonic Laboratory at MIT, in Cambridge, Mass. However, most of his work life was spent at MITRE Corporation in Bedford, Mass., where he was employed from 1961 until his retirement in 1991.
He is survived by his son, John C. McCarthy and his wife, Andrea Brox, of Concord, Mass.; grandson, John B. McCarthy also of Concord; grandson, Kieran Pinto of Berkeley, Calif.; brother, Robert McCarthy of Bedford, N.H.; sister, Ann Stewart also of Bedford, N.H.; and longtime partner, Sabine Muller of Marco Island, Fla., and Heidelberg, Germany; and her daughters, Stephanie and Tina of Heidelberg, Germany.
In addition, he was predeceased by a brother, Francis McCarthy; sister, Marilyn Collins; and daughter, Susan Pinto.
A memorial service will be held on April 23, 2016, at 11 a.m., at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester-by-the Sea, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Trustees of the Reservations, 572 Essex Street, Beverly, MA 01515-1530.
