David's Story

GLOUCESTER: Mr. David M. O’Connor, 79, of Gloucester passed away on Monday, November 2, 2015, at home, with his loving family at his side. He was the husband of Olive M. “Ollie” (Brien) O’Connor, with whom he shared 14 years of marriage, and 38 years of true devoted companionship.

David was born July 8, 1936, in Gloucester, son of the late Maurice B. and Margaret (Lane) O’Connor. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester. A graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1954.

He worked for Seafood Kitchens as a maintenance man for several years, until his retirement due to ill health. David worked many jobs over the years. He captained many fishing vessels for people. He was a remarkable fisherman and would always help his friends. He worked on the railroad and also worked for Metal High Drives in Beverly.

David had a great personality and did many different things. He enjoyed camping with his family and driving his motor home all over. He enjoyed going to the Pemi Valley Blue Grass Festival. He also enjoyed Nascar, and taking early morning long rides. He was an avid sports fan, loved his animals, and enjoyed gardening. He maintained a beautiful garden. He could also be seen at the Crows Nest or fixing things around the property. He had a love for country music and woodworking.

In addition to his loving wife, Ollie, he is survived by his five children, David A. O’Connor of Palm Coast, Fla., Edward M. O’Connor and his wife, Eileen of Gloucester, John M. O’Connor and his wife, Rudee of Methuen, Francis J. Brien and his wife, Jamie of Canyon Country, Calif., and Holly M. O’Connor and her significant other, William R. Turner of Gloucester; his stepdaughter, Beatrice Cleveland and her husband, Kurt of Virginia; one brother, Donald O’Connor of Lynn; one sister, Helen E. Orlando and her husband, Charlie of Gloucester; his loving grandchildren, Kevin, Keith, Daniel and Nicole O’Connor, Pete Dariphatana, Samantha Nikolas, Blake Brien, Myiah Porper, Jacob Jackson, Aaron and Nate Cleveland; his very special devoted, caregiver and copilot, Samantha Russell; his great-grandchildren, Jarred Johnson, Cameron O’Connor, Riley O’Connor, Dylan Militello and Riley O’Connor; and his goddaughter, Danielle Porter and her husband, Shawn. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Howard and Mary Clayton of Beverly; sister-in-law, Nicole Anderson and her husband, Glenn of Saugus; brother-in-law, Nicholas Brien of Gloucester; many nieces, nephews, longtime devoted friends, and his former wife, Beatrice (Muise) O’Connor.

He is predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Elwell.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend David’s Visiting Hours in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester, on Thursday, November 5, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a prayer service on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations in David’s memory be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
