Dr. John's Story
ESSEX, MA - Dr. John J. Stavros, 86 passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018, from a longtime battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was a longtime resident of Essex and survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary E. Stavros. He is also survived by his two daughters, Julie Stavros of Carlsbad Calif., and Kristi Stavros of Melbourne, Fla. Dr. Stavros' only son, John J. Stavros Jr., passed away in 1973. He is also survived by his brother, Nicholas Stavropuolous of Revere, and a grandson of Danvers.
Dr. Stavros was a graduate of Harvard University. He then enlisted into the USAF at McGuire Air Force Base as a 1st LT. He went onto Medical School at Boston University and then went onto specialty training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. He went on to join Salem Hospital as an ENT Surgeon and then became Chief of Ear Nose & Throat where he practiced for over 40 years.
Dr. Stavros was a pioneer in the first surgical procedure Stapedectomy in 1967. This procedure restored the hearing of hundreds of people over the years he spent at Salem Hospital.
Per Dr. Stavros' request, there will only be a private ceremony for his wife and daughters in Melbourne, Fla.
Dr. Stavros was very special to his family and he will be greatly missed.
