Eleanor's Story

Eleanor (Peterson) Joseph, 100, wife of the late Roland T. Joseph and longtime resident of Western Avenue, died Wednesday, November 16, 2016, in her home following a brief illness.
Born in Boston, November 10, 1916, daughter of the late Ralph E. and Annie Belle (Harlow) Peterson, she was raised in Beverly until the age of five when the family moved to Essex. She graduated from Essex High School, a member of the Class of 1934, and continued her education training as a hairdresser at the former Wilfred Academy in Boston. Married in 1936, the Joseph's made their home and raised their family on Western Avenue and owned Gaybrook Garage until retirement. She worked as a hairdresser in her shop on Main Street before starting a family, and with her children grown worked as a floor manager at Jordan Marsh in Peabody.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay L. Joseph of Essex; two sons, Robert T. Joseph of Essex and Ronald E. Joseph and his wife, Alice of Manchester, Conn.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Carol and Sally Soucy. She was the mother of the late Ralph P. Joseph, formerly of Hamilton, and sister of the late Eugene Peterson, formerly of Ipswich. A special thank you to Care Dimensions, TLC, Julie, Renee, Maryanne, and Karen who made her last days comfortable.
Her funeral service will be held Monday, November 21, at 11 a.m., following an hour of visitation starting at 10 a.m. in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by interment in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the charity of one's choice.
