Elja Costa Rita, 86, wife of the late Carlos Costa Rita, of Gloucester, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017, at the home of her daughter surrounded by her loving family. She was affectionately known as "Vavo" to everyone.
Born July 13, 1930, in the Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria Brum.
As a young lady, Elja had worked for many years as a seamstress at the former Mighty-Mac. Upon the company's closing, she worked for the Eastern Avenue Coffee Shop where she made many friends and was presented with exciting travel opportunities.
She was a very devoted mother and grandmother who cherished her grandchildren and with great pride attended all of their sporting and musical events. She loved traveling with her family to Disney, and always looked forward to camping and canoe trips on the Saco River in North Conway. On occasion, a family trip to Foxwoods, complete with a concert or live performance, was always special.
Elja was devout in her faith and to her church and was a long time member of the DES Club. Her kindness and smile will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her two daughters, Anna Lee Menezes wife of Carlos Menezes, Doreen Wonson, wife of Bruce Wonson; grandchildren, Carlos Menezes Jr., Lee Anna Menezes, Jacqueline Wonson; her sisters, Fernanda Alves and Stella Grace; and sister-in-law, Fernanda Brown; her nephews, Robert J. Alves, Dean Alves, Carlton Grace, and Scott Brown and his wife, Melissa; special people in her life, Emily Pecora, Devon Elliott, Brian Bos; and her dear friends at Lincoln Park.
In addition to her husband, Carlos, she was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Brown; and brothers-in-law, Robert Alves and City Councilor Carlton Grace.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, at 12:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
