LADY LAKE, FL - Erik Christian Newell, born Jan. 25, 1978, to Dana and Cynthia (Allen) Newell, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2017, at the home of his parents in The Villages, Lady Lake, Fla., after a courageous and lengthy battle with liver disease.
He attended Gloucester and Rockport schools and worked for many local businesses on Cape Ann through the years.
Erik was a free spirit following such bands as Greatful Dead, Rat Dog, and Phish around the country. He was an accomplished fire stick artist and enjoyed entertaining people with his skill.
His favorite job was driving an 18-wheeler for Big Tows out of New York, hauling automobiles around the country where he made many friends along the way.
Erik is survived by a son, Damien Newell Bowen of North Carolina; his parents, Dana and Cindy Newell of The Villages, Fla.; his sister, Heather Newell, and nephew, John David Newell of Florida; his aunts and uncles, Catherine Spanks of Gloucester, Linda and Lloyd Dennis of The Villages, Fla., Carol and Joseph Pallazola of San Diego, Calif., and William Newell of West Virginia.
He also leaves behind his good friends, Ricardo and Monica Fijor of New York, Matt Kilduff of Garberville, Calif., plus many cousins.
Erik was predeceased by his girlfriend, Lauren Bowen; his grandparents, Warren and Barbara Allen of Gloucester, William and Esther Newell of Rockport and The Villages, Fla.; plus his aunt, Deborah (Allen) Dementri of Gloucester.
Erik will be missed and remembered by many for his kind heart, free spirit and his crazy beard that got him nicknamed "Goat" by his friends.
A service is being planned for the end of July in Gloucester to be announced at a later date.
