Gloucester - Eugene A. "Gus" Surrette, 73, of Gloucester, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at Addison Gilbert Hospital. He was the loving husband of Florence (Hannibal) Surrette with whom they shared 36 years of marriage. Born in Malden, Mass., on May 26, 1945, he was the son of the late William and Elisabeth (Surrette) Tolman. Gus was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the class of 1963 and continued on to Fitchburg State College for teaching. He then went on to Cambridge College and earned his master's degree in teaching. Gus taught for many years at Gloucester High School Vocational in the machine shop and became the principal of the vocational department. He also taught at the North Shore Technical/Vocational High School machine shop in Middleton. For a number of years he also taught at the North Shore Community College in Lynn and the Bunker Hill Community College in Boston as an adjunct professor. Gus was a very passionate teacher and could find the good in any student no matter what their ability was. When someone would ask him how many children he had he would always reply "hundreds."
Gus loved Gloucester, his family, the ocean and spending time in Maine. He loved teaching. He enjoyed gardening and playing his guitar, riding his motorcycle with friends (the old Aces and Eights riding club), and traveling. He was a member of the Amvets, Elks and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife Florence, he is survived by three brothers, Wallace Burbine and his wife Dorothy of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Kenneth Tolman of New Portland, Maine, and Lester Tolman and his wife Raylene of Strong, Maine; one sister Phyllis Sova and her husband Peter of Gloucester, his sister-in-law Harriet Tolman of Maine; his dog Magee; many nieces and nephews including special nephews Ryan and Derek Osmond; and a dear friend David Lloyd.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three brothers, Bernard Burbine and Benjamin Burbine, William Tolman, one sister, Rosemarie Walsh; his uncle Jeffery Surrette and "Gramppy Surrette."

His visiting hours will be held on Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA. Family and friends are cordially invited. A funeral service will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, Friday April 19, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a burial in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery in West Gloucester.
