Frances's Story

Text size

ROCKPORT, MA - Frances C. "Fran" Grier was born in Gloucester, Mass., on April 23, 1925, to the family of John Duncan McIssac and Delphina F. Madruga. Fran passed away peacefully in Rockport at the age of 92 at her home of 73 years, on Monday, March 12, 2018. Frances was the wife of the late John H. "Buddy" Grier.
Frances attended Gloucester schools. She worked at a young age at Sterling's Drug Store Food Counter, the First National Grocery Store until its closing, and later waitressed at Oleanna Restaurant in Rockport until her retirement.
Frances was a devoted wife to John H. Grier. They married on November 22, 1945, and raised a busy family of five children with various animals. Their home was always open to more and hosted many lively parties. Fran was a grounding force, no frills, no fanfare. No one messed with Fran! She enjoyed the simple things and enjoyed time spent with her sisters at Gloucester dances and playing cards. Fran and Bud enjoyed strolls on the Gloucester Boulevard and attended the Gloucester and Rockport band concerts on weekends up until about 10 years ago. Fran enjoyed her crossword puzzles and watching old time movies - but her weekly outings with her daughter, Tina, were the highlight of her week.
Frances was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, John H. Grier; their son, William D. Grier; and many sisters and brothers. She is survived by her sister, Natalie Landergren; Fran's daughter, Kristine "Tina" and husband, Dean Ribiero; sons, John H. "Jack" Jr. and wife, Susan Grier, James and wife, Pamela Grier, Jerry Grier; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and close friend, Bruce Drohan. We will all miss her dearly.
There will be no services or visiting hours. The family would like to thank all the kind gestures and sentiments from friends, relatives, and neighbors, and carry out Frances' wishes to spread her ashes off the Gloucester Boulevard.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations made in Frances Grier's name to the Cape Ann Animal Aid Association, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester. For online condolences, please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com.
