George A.'s Story

George Albert Amero, 93, of Gloucester, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Gloucester on December 21, 1922, son of the late William and Dora (Mason) Amero.
George was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1942. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War, having sailed aboard the USS Kadashan Bay which was hit by a Kamikaze pilot.
Mr. Amero was employed for over 41 years at General Electric, Lynn as a licensed industrial electrician, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, Gloucester American Legion, Cape Ann Sportsman Club and the Danvers Fish and Game Club.
George had many hobbies which included hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, golf, surf clamming and training his bird dogs. He also enjoyed swimming at Good Harbor Beach and blueberry picking.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his nephews and nieces, David Medico, Sally Medico, Donna Shine, Jacqueline Hensel, Tasha Amero and Vincent Amero; lifelong friend and helpful companion, Richard “Dick” Ilges; close friend, Pierce Sears and his special neighbor, Beverly Gardner.
He was predeceased by his sister, Pollyanna Keating; brothers, Richard and Donald Amero.
A private graveside service will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Cape Ann Animal Aid Association, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
