George's Story

George Matta, 83, of Gloucester, husband of the late Helen “Honey” Matta, passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 with his family by his side.
George was born in Brockton on November 30, 1932, the son of the late George and Anna (Azizih) Matta. He graduated from Brockton High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force and served proudly during the Korean War. When he returned home, he and Honey operated Joseph’s Market on Maplewood Ave, for approximately five years. He was a Retailer Manager at Henry’s Market in Beverly for 22 years; worked at True Value in Gloucester and continued on to work at Timberline in Gloucester as a Wholesale Manager, finally retiring from there. George enjoyed going to the dog track at Wonderland as well as helping out his brother-in-law, Johnny and nephew, Michael, who owned a kennel and trained the greyhounds. He loved to golf, mostly at Cape Ann Golf Course, but traveled to Florida and Las Vegas with his son-in-law Robert, who enjoyed the game also. George had an infectious smile and a great sense of humor. He used his sarcasm to tease others and get to know them. Bringing up the Boston Red Sox or New England Patriots was a definite conversation starter with George. Near and dear to his heart and an important part of his life, he was very involved with the deaf community in Beverly and was very supportive to their causes. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus throughout Massachusetts and attended meetings in the Salem area. His people pleasing skills and laughter will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his three children, Anna Marie Lynch and her husband, Robert of Franklin, MA, Paul Matta and his wife, Cheri, Beth Whittemore and her husband Laurence, all of Gloucester; two grandchildren, Brett George Whittemore and Ryan James Whittemore, both of Gloucester; sisters, Georgette (Matta) Gray of Chicago, IL, Patricia (Matta) Litif and her husband Kevin of Bridgewater, Ronald Matta and his wife Barbara of Conway, S.C., Daniel Matta of Brockton; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Matta of Easton and Louise Matta of N.H. He was predeceased by his brothers, Edward, William, Edmund and Vincent Matta; his sisters-in-law, Gloria, wife of William; Patricia Matta, wife of Daniel, and Ralph Gray Sr. husband of Georgette.
His visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester, MA on Friday, August 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. His funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. followed by a mass celebrated at St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish at 60 Prospect St. Gloucester at 11 a.m. His burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
