Gilbert's Story

ROCKPORT: Gilbert M. Travers, 97, of Rockport passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital Hospice Suite following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late, Elizabeth (Salo) of Rockport, sharing 63 years of marriage, and Priscilla (Kippen) of Valparaiso, Fla., sharing three years of marriage.

Gilly, as he was affectionately known to friends and family, was born in Gloucester. Following High School, he worked at various jobs until 1942, when he began a 33-year career as a machinist, and later a production standards engineer at the United Shoe Machinery Corp in Beverly.

He served in the 28th Infantry Division during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was severely wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, but he always credited the medics for their daring efforts calling them the real heroes.

Gilbert was a member of American Legion Post 98 in Rockport, and the Lodge of Elks 892 in Gloucester. He was also involved for many years in activities at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church in Gloucester.

Gilbert was a devoted family man who treasured time spent with 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, who all loved and adored Grampy. He managed to create special moments and lasting memories for each and every one.

He is survived by his sons, Donald Travers and wife, Joanne of Ft. Myers, Fla., Robert Travers and wife, Betsy of Andover, Mass., Richard Travers and wife, Linda of Billerica, Mass., Stephen Travers and wife, Carol of Merrimack, N.H. Other survivors are grandchildren, Michael Travers and wife, Peggy, Pat Travers, Christine Travers and husband, Steven Veator, Susan Worthy and husband, Cole, Karin Sullivan and husband, Mark, Amy Gangi and husband, Paul, Julie Pollock and husband, Aaron, Lori Travers and Pat McLaughlin, Ron Travers, and Devin Travers; and the previously mentioned 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; in addition to many nephews and nieces.

Gilbert was predeceased by his parents, Adeline Travers Viator and Joseph Travers; brothers, Anthony Travers, Joseph Travers, Manuel Viator and a sister, Theresa Hadley.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 6, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joachim’s Church, Rockport. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
