Helene A. (Hilshey)'s Story

Text size

It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that the family of Helene (Hilshey) Dennis announces her passing on Thanksgiving Day at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A long, full life has moved on to Our Lord. It is with sadness of her loss, but with joy that we had her for so long as our special aunt, family member, confidant, and most of all best friend and wise mentor to her numerous nieces and and nephews. She was the wife of the late Lloyd Dennis.
Helene was born in Gloucester the daughter of Elizabeth (MacDonald) and William Hilshey. She had just celebrated her 96th birthday on November 22nd and with that long life was able to regale the family with rich stories of her life travels, experiences, and the changes in the world as it evolved from her childhood to advising the family “young’uns.” She was always there for family and friends, especially the very close ones Rosalie, Rocco, and Loretta.
She had a deep appreciation for life and a lifelong fondness for her childhood home on Portuguese Hill. Helene loved to travel. She went to Nova Scotia, her parent’s birthplace, with Betty, Bruce, and Margaret and to Pittsfield, and Indiana with Carol and Betty.
Helene worked at Sylvania in Ipswich during the war years, at Universal as Coat Inspector, and later at Gorton’s where she remained for many years until retirement. She also worked in the Cafeteria at the Plum Cove School.
She is also survived by her stepson Lloyd “LD” Dennis, Jr. and his wife Linda of FL, Lloyd’s children Diane, wife of Joseph Parisi, David, as well as former daughter-in-law Marie Murray; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hilshey and Virginia Hilshey; her loving and caring special niece, Carol (Hilshey) Burke and family.
She was predeceased by her sister, Muriel and her husband, Carleton McKay and their son and special nephew, Bruce C. McKay; brother Harold and wife, Sis; brother, Robert and his wife Charlotte and their daughter Linda Hoysradt; brother, William and his daughter, Sharon Dagle; and brothers, Raymond and Gordon; stepdaughter, Ann Tarantino and stepgranddaughter, Pam Dennis.
Although she had no children herself, she is survived by 14 nieces and nephews; 32 great-nieces and nephews; 20 great-great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great great-nieces and nephews.
Helene’s Funeral Service will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester, on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 11 a.m. Her visiting hours will be in the Funeral Home on Tuesday, evening, November 28, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. For online condolences and register book please visit www.pikenewhall.com.
