Jane Ellen's Story

Jane Ellen (MacKenzie) Jenkins, beloved wife of Mark T. Jenkins of Gloucester, died peacefully on August 30, 2017, at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester.
Born February 25, 1954, in Beverly, Mass., she was the daughter of William F. MacKenzie and Eleanor (Robertson) MacKenzie, both of Hamilton. She was raised in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in 1972. Jane earned her B.S. in Nursing from the University of Vermont, graduating in 1976. She began her career as a nurse immediately following at Addison Gilbert Hospital (AGH). During her 41-year career as a nurse, she worked at AGH, The Hunt Center in Danvers, and Beverly Hospital, where she ended her career in July 2017. She loved what she did and her career as a nurse was a perfect fit for her positive attitude and caring spirit.
Jane wed the love of her life, Mark, in October of 1977, in Gloucester and they raised two daughters together. Once their daughters were grown, Jane and Mark began to enjoy their time together travelling and on their boat. She remarked that she was thankful to have started to do the things that were important to her before she became ill. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and dear friend to many. She always thought of others, and was also known for being creative, sweet, funny, festive, and for always sharing a smile. Her love of lobster, hot pink, adding “bling” to an outfit, and Niles Beach were evident to all who knew her.
She is survived by her cherished daughters, Amanda Harrison and her husband, Nate, of Southampton, Mass., and Laurie Nirenberg and her husband, Dave of Ashland, Mass.; her treasured grandchildren, Henry (10), Mackenzie (6), Calvin (4), and Violet (3) who knew her as “Gum;” and her sistes-in-law, Doris MacKenzie of Pennsylvania and Maridia MacKenzie of Hamilton. She is additionally survived by her father-in-law, John (Jack) Jenkins; sister and brothers-in-law, Maureen Klopotoski and her husband, Robert, Jack Jenkins and his wife, Debra, Kenny Jenkins and his wife, Sharon, all of Gloucester, Paul Jenkins and his wife, Ellie of North Carolina, Phil Jenkins and his partner, Julie Dickinson of Medford, Davya Jenkins and her partner, Ed Krikorian, Rusty Jenkins and his wife, Lisa, and Peter Jenkins, and Allyson Murray and her husband, Steve, all of Gloucester; as well as 24 nieces and nephews.
Jane is additionally survived by her dear friends, Karen Donahue of Florida, Corrine Jurgens of New York, Catherine Spanks, Becky Carrancho, and Mary Ann Boucher, all of Gloucester; her beloved “Tuesday Girls;” and a great number of her nurse colleagues who touched her life over the course of many years.
In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by her sister, Susan Lewis of Florida; brother, David MacKenzie of Virginia; brother, William MacKenzie, Jr. of Hamilton; nephew, Brian MacKenzie of Hamilton; mother-in-law, Patricia Jenkins; brothers-in-law, Thomas Jenkins and Matthew Jenkins, all of Gloucester; sister-in-law, Maureen Jenkins of Medford; and nephew, Chris Jenkins of Gloucester.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Celebration of Life event on Sunday, October 15, 2017, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Elks at Bass Rocks, 97 Atlantic Road, Gloucester, MA 01930. Guests are encouraged to wear Jane’s signature color, pink. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jane’s memory to the Open Door/Cape Ann Food Pantry at www.foodpantry.org or The Cutchins Programs for Children and Families at www.cutchins.org, where Jane’s daughter and son-in-law both work.
