Joan (Child) Vidal, 87, of Gloucester, wife of the late Francis A. “Frank” Vidal, passed away at her home on Thursday afternoon, May 11, 2017.
Joan was born in Malden, Mass. on September 15, 1929, the daughter of the late Elmer M. and Alice F. (Wood) Child. She attended and graduated from Gloucester High School with the Class of 1947. Joan had worked as an assistant at the former Woolworths on Main St. and did waitressing at the Tavern and Bob’s Clam Shack for many years. She also worked at Rule Industries. Her last job was as a cashier at Cape Ann Market, which later became Shaw’s Market, before she decided to retire. Although she held various jobs, she found lots of quality time to spend with her family. She loved being with her kids and grandchildren. Her perennial gardens were her solitude after playing Bingo twice a week at the Rose Baker Senior Center and St. Ann’s Hall on Friday evenings. She made her daily trip to Jeff’s Variety every morning to scratch her lottery tickets and enjoyed having breakfast twice a week with her friends at Lobsta Land. Joan hung crystals in her windows so the sun could catch its beams through them, casting beautiful rainbows throughout her home. They were beautiful, just like her, and she is going to be missed. She is survived by her daughters, Carol McKenzie and her husband, Rory, of Gloucester, Kathryn Loika and her husband, Alexander, of Raleigh, N.C.; sons, Christopher Vidal and his wife, Dorothy, of Gloucester, David Vidal and his wife Ellen, of Amesbury; grandchildren, Nicole Reeves of Beverly, Melanie Costa and her husband, Phillip, of Peabody, Alex McKenzie and his wife, Christina Calabrese, of Montana, Marcie Sidlowski and her husband Joshua, of Gloucester, Harry and Dana Vidal of Amesbury, Cheryl Foley and her husband Robert, of Sandown, N.H., Frank Hall of Gloucester; great-grandchildren, Devan Reeves of Beverly, Talia and Arianna Costa of Peabody, Zachery Hall of Seattle, Anna and Daniel Foley of Sandown, N.H., Sophia Rose Vidal of Amesbury, and one sister, Dorothy Lufkin of Ossipee, N.H. She was predeceased by her sisters, Barbara Poole and Priscilla Gunderson and her brother, Elmer Child Jr.
There are no visiting hours and burial will be held privately. Her Memorial Mass will be held in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Prospect St. Gloucester, on Thursday, May 18, at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to: Rose Baker Senior Center, 6 Manuel F. Lewis Road, Gloucester, MA 01930. Online condolences may be given at: www.greelyfuneralhome.com.
