GLOUCESTER, MA - Jocelyn M. Niekrenz passed away at Addison Gilbert Hospital on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, with friends at her bedside. She suffered a severe stroke.
Of English and Scottish ancestry, Jocelyn was born at Whitney, Oxfordshire in the U.K., the only child of John and Mary Everritt. She attended Whitney Grammar School, was a Girl Guide, and enjoyed swimming in the River Windrush, and playing tennis.
Jocelyn worked for the Red Cross in the U.K. She married Kurt "Nick" Niekrenz who had been stationed near Oxford with the U.S. Air Force. She moved to America with him and later became a U.S. citizen. They lived at Air Force bases in Missouri and New Hampshire. Kurt also served in Vietnam.
Jocelyn later moved to Swampscott, Mass., and then to Gloucester, where she has lived for many years. She and her pets were widely known to the community due to walks and chats along Stacey Boulevard, and her frequent visits to the Sawyer Free Library.
She did administrative work for the Red Cross in Kansas City, Mo., for Bell and Howell Corporation in Burlington, Mass., and for Kel Corp in Melrose, Mass., until her retirement.
Jocelyn was predeceased by her parents, husband, and members of her extended family in the U.K., her dear friend Florence Corso, and beloved canine pets Brady, Frankie and Megan. She is survived by her beloved cat, Jasmine. She is also survived by her friends in Gloucester, New Hampshire, California, the U.K., and Australia.
In accordance with Jocelyn's wishes, there will be no services and burial will be private. Contributions in Jocelyn's memory may be made to Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930, or the Friends of Sawyer Free Library, 2 Dale Ave, Gloucester, MA 01930.
