John M. Anderson, 84, of Gloucester, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017, in the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass., after a battle with cancer. John was born in Gloucester, Mass., on November 25, 1932, the son of the late Michael and Katherine (Shea) Anderson. He was a graduate of St. Ann’s High School and enlisted in the United States Marines Corps directly after graduation. He served proudly during the Korean War. When he returned, he attended Bentley College and later became a Fuller Brush Salesman, going door to door during the 1950s. In 1964 he obtained his real estate license and opened, along with Herbert Joseph, the Joseph and Anderson Real Estate Office on Thatcher Road. He also had worked for the Automobile Legal Association Car Insurance. John and his long-term companion, Gina Haszard, traveled extensively throughout Europe, including Greece, Hawaii, the Caribbean and the United States. John liked his live theatre, especially musicals, and he loved to go dancing and swimming with Gina. At one time he operated the summer concession stand at Cape Hedge Beach. A proud Marine, he will be missed by his family. He is survived by his three children, James Anderson of Magnolia, Jack Anderson and his fiancé, Allison Cecilio of Gloucester, Donna Costopolous and her husband, David of Ipswich; two grandchildren, Erik Anderson of Ipswich and Cheryl Brennan and her husband, Sean of Beverly; and a dear cousin, Mary Shea of Arlington, Mass. He was predeceased by his longtime companion, Gina Haszard.
There are no visiting hours. John’s graveside service and burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Office of Veteran’s Services, City Hall, 9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930, make checks out to “Veteran’s Services."
