Gloucester - Judith "Judy" (Benham) Kopanon, 79, a Gloucester native, died peacefully surrounded by family on April 3, 2019 following an extended illness which she fought valiantly. She was the wife of the late Michael "Tasey" Kopanon. They shared 47 years of marriage together.
Born in Gloucester on February 19, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Gillie) Benham. Judy was a member of the Gloucester High School Class of 1958 and a proud member of the Drill Team. She earned her associate degree and went on to work for several prominent judges and attorneys on the North Shore as a legal secretary. She continued her full-time career as parish secretary at St. John's Episcopal Church in Gloucester, where she was loved by parishioners and colleagues alike. Her greatest accomplishment was as a loving daughter, sister, aunt, mother, wife, and core of her family.
A lifelong resident of Gloucester, Judy will be remembered for her love of the sunshine, Good Harbor Beach and her long walks with friends and family around Bass Rocks. She adored animals and was an accomplished equestrian prior to starting a family. Judy was a devout Catholic and religiously attended Mass at St. Peter's Catholic Church and later at Our Lady of Good Voyage.
With Judy, it was never about her. She always put others first and was trusted for her grounded advice. She was a consummate "giver" and accepted people as they were.
She is survived by her children, Susan and Thomas O'Connell of Boston, Sandy and Walter Palmer of Milton and Rockport, and Kevin and Martha (Lynch) Kopanon of Hingham; she was the proud grandmother of nine of her greatest fans, Mackenzie, Morgan, Cameron, and Brett O'Connell, Sophie, Coalter, and Sarah Palmer, and Camilla and Jasper Kopanon, who will never forget their many memories with Nana Judy and Tasey on Good Harbor Beach. She has also left behind her dear siblings, Jane Gleason of Rockport, Mary "Mimi" Benham and her husband, Ron Ross of Gloucester, and Robert Benham Jr. of Gloucester whose late wife Terre she called "her other sister." She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, and their children, who were a big part of her daily life.
Visiting hours will be held in Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Sunday, April 7th from 4 to 7 p.m.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 8th at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Family and friends are welcome to attend. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester, MA. For more information and to send online condolences, please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com.

Although I could selfishly say "I wish she could have stayed longer"..it would be just that. I am at peace knowing that she is being embraced by God and by all her loved ones who were waiting to welcome her home....and I know she will be waiting for me to join her; in the meantime, I know she'll b watching me to make sure I behave...that's my Judy. God Bless her wonderful family. I love all of you.
