Marguerite L. "Midge" Montagna, 97, of Springfield, Mass. and Rockport, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at home at Reeds Landing. Midge was born in Revere, Mass. to Ralph and Oresta (Marenghi) Carbone. Midge was predeceased by her beloved and devoted husband of 64 years, Raymond J. Montagna, and her brothers, Ralph and Richard Carbone. She is survived by her daughters, Gail (Jeffrey) Barnett of Orange, Conn., Marilyn Montagna of Springfield, Mass. and Diane Higgins of Atlanta, Ga.; her grandchildren, Andrea (Zach) Gemignani, Kimberly Barnett, Melissa Higgins (Matt Lincoln), and Alyson (Yann)Pirio; her great-grandchildren, Owen, Maya, and Lila Gemignani, and Delphine Pirio; and her best friend and caring companion for the last two years, Lynn Caron.
In her early career Midge directed the Trinity Nursery School and Kindergarten and continued in education as a reading specialist for students with dyslexia in the Longmeadow school system for over 20 years. She was very proud of her students who went on to success in college and careers. She had a love for reading and spent many hours reading to residents at Reeds Landing. She was a talented oil and pastel artist who enjoyed creating portraits, still life's and scenes near Long Beach in Rockport where she spent almost every one of her 96 summers. But her greatest passion was time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family and friends.
Her Funeral Service will begin on Tuesday, May 16th, at 10 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 361 Sumner Ave., Springfield. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield. Calling hours will be on Monday, May 15th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St. East Longmeadow.
