Marilyn J.'s Story
Marilyn Jane (Goodwin) Foster, 83, died peacefully on Thursday morning, February 23, 2017. She was the wife of the late Charles C. Foster with whom she had shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in Gloucester on June 28, 1933, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (St. John) Goodwin. Marilyn was raised in Gloucester and was a graduate of Saint Ann's, Class of 1951 and the Katharine Gibbs School of Boston.
After marrying the love of her life, Charlie, in 1956, they went on to build the family business, still known today, as Foster from Gloucester Inc. while raising their four children. In addition to being a busy working mother Marilyn was a voracious reader, accomplished pianist, and great friend to the community. She loved the ocean and her home of Gloucester so much. In her later years she enjoyed volunteering at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce.
Marilyn will be remembered most for her love and devotion to family; she included all of her wonderful employees over the years as "family." She was the very definition of maternal: protective, caring, nurturing, loving, warm, tender, gentle, and kind. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her four children, Capt. David Foster (Elizabeth) and their children Douglas and Mark of Gloucester; Peter Foster (Diana) and their children Colby and Michael of Rockport; Sheryl Foster-Dardas (David) and their children Selin, Bryan, Kyle, and Nathan of Derry, N.H., Susan Aaron (William) and their children Kathryn and William of Gloucester; and special cousin, Margaret Bresnahan (Goodwin) of Beverly.
Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Thursday morning, March 2, at 8:45 followed by a Mass celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home will be on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Massachusetts, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472 or to a charity of one’s choice.
