ROCKPORT AND BURLINGTON: Martha S. (Luce) Mellen, 84, of Rockport and Burlington, Mass., wife of the late John Thomas Mellen Jr., passed away at her home in Rockport on Monday afternoon, September 21, 2015. Martha was born in Lowell, Mass., on March 8, 1931, the daughter of the late Ralph Atwood and Dorothy Sibbel (Turnbull) Luce. She received her Associates Degree and became an administrative assistant in a publishing company. Her husband, John opened a business with their three sons. She loved all living things, flowers and creatures, but especially enjoyed feeding the birds. For four generations her family lived in Rockport. She will be missed with her special smile that would shine through even the toughest years. She is survived by her three sons, Stuart Mellen and his wife, Wiline of Rockport, David Mellen and his wife, Erin of Litchfield , N.H., John T. Mellen III and his wife, Debra of Tyngsboro, Mass.; ten grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Natalie, Sammy, Abigail, Kelly, Sean, Christopher James, and Shannon Casey; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Brian. She was predeceased by her brother, Ralph Atwood Luce, Jr.
Her visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA on Thursday, September 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. Her funeral service will be held in the United Church of Christ, 6 Lexington Street, Burlington, MA, on Friday, September 25, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Pine Haven Cemetery, Bedford Street, Burlington, MA.
