Mary Ann's Story
Mary Ann Velasquez, a longtime resident of Lakewood, Colo., died Sunday, May 28, 2017, at the Garden on Quail Assisted Living in Arvada, Colo.
Born in 1931 in Gloucester, Mary Ann received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mount St. Mary’s College in New Hampshire. After college she joined the U.S. Air Force and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant as a flight nurse during the Korean conflict.
She met her future husband, 1st LT Herman H. Velasquez, while stationed in Witchita Falls, Texas. They married in 1956. After military service, Mary Ann moved frequently while her husband worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office and was stationed around the country and in Germany. They eventually settled in Denver and raised two sons.
Mary Ann enjoyed many pursuits, travel, floral design, volunteering, gardening, and she was a talented artist.
Mary Ann was truly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Mary Ann is survived by her sons, Andrew (Ann Marie) Velasquez of Antonito, Colo., and Martin Velasquez of Lakewood, Colo.; grandsons, Tony (Cynthia) Velasquez of Westminster, Colo., and Gabriel Velasquez of Boulder, Colo.; sisters, Julie (Fred) O’Dea, Margaret Boudreau, and Nina Millifollie.
Mary Ann was predeceased by her husband, Herman H. Velasquez (1990); parents, Benedetto Randazza and Margaret (Favazza) Randazza of Gloucester; brothers, John and Joseph Randazza; and sister, Grace Murdock.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
