Gloucester - Mary Eleanor (Geary) LoPresti, lovingly known by her friends as Ellie, age 96, of Gloucester, transitioned to her Heavenly home on Thursday, June 6, 2019. She passed on peacefully at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with family by her side.
Ellie was born in Gloucester on January 25, 1923, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Crowley) Geary. She grew up in East Gloucester and was a true Gloucester girl at heart. She was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1941. She then continued her education at Bridgewater Teachers College, Class of 1945, receiving her Bachelor's degree in Education and graduating with high honors. After graduating from college Ellie began her career in teaching at the Eastern Avenue School in Gloucester. She taught the 6th grade alongside of her best childhood friend, Shirley (Hanson) Melanson, and they were so happy to teach together in the same school that they attended. Ellie moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1953, and instantly fell in love with the area. She worked as a substitute teacher in the public-school systems and also taught CCD in her local church. Ellie returned to her beloved Gloucester in 2015 to live out the remaining years of her life.
During her youth, Ellie enjoyed spending time with her friends, days spent at the beach along Gloucester's back shore, going to football games, and even hit the ski slopes a few times. Ellie had a flair for the arts and was creative in many ways. She painted in her early years, enjoyed yard sales and making something old look new again. She also played the piano, loved the theater, enjoyed sewing and put on great parties for her children. Halloween costumes were beautiful and always made by hand, she threw Hawaiian luaus for her oldest daughter, Cheryl, and birthday parties always had a theme woven through the entire event. But Ellie's true gifting was in writing poetry and she was always asked to write a poem for her High School and College reunions. Ellie had a strong Christian faith and was very involved in church activities, and hosted prayer groups in her home for 15 years. Ellie loved family, was a caring friend, and managed to maintain her Gloucester friendships even while living in Florida. She also treasured her trips back to Gloucester every summer as well as trips with her younger brother and sister-in-law to European countries.
Ellie is survived by her 2 daughters, Cheryl A. LoPresti of Oxford, MA and Marlene G. LoPresti of Gloucester, her brother Joseph E. Geary (Katie) and many nieces and nephews. Ellie was predeceased by her older brother, John W. Geary and her closest life-long friend, Shirley (Hanson) Melanson. Ellie will be greatly missed by her friends from Florida, with whom she shared a great bond, as well as all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to thank the staff at Seacoast Nursing Home for their compassionate care of Ellie during the past 4 years and Care Dimensions for their end-of-life care.

Ellie's visiting hour will be held on Wednesday morning, June 12, 2019 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited. Her funeral mass will follow, being celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Prospect Street, Gloucester at 11:30 a.m. Her burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Contributions may be made in her name to Friends of Seacoast, 292 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. For online condolences, please visit
