Gloucester - Maureen A. (Vieira) McCarthy, 67, of Magnolia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Kaplan Family Hospice House on Friday, April 12, 2019, following a brief illness. Maureen was born in Magnolia on February 23, 1952, and was the daughter of the late Marie A. Vieira and Russell O. Vieira.

Maureen spent her childhood in Magnolia enjoying the ocean and Magnolia Beach. As a young adult, she became a hostess at the Surf Restaurant where later she would celebrate her wedding reception. She joined the Manchester Bath & Tennis Club playing tennis and cribbage while enjoying the beautiful Magnolia beach summers. Maureen was an avid gardener with an impressive green thumb, creating exquisitely designed gardens, which gave her great pleasure. Above all she adored her family and her dogs, who were an important part of her life.

Maureen worked at the Cape Ann Savings Bank for 18 years holding several positions, becoming an Assistant Treasurer. She also worked for Scott Energy Company for 10 years managing the Oil Department. For the past 15 years, she was the Office Manager of Town & Country Masonry.

Over these years, Maureen cultivated countless friendships, personally and professionally, and was admired for her graciousness, integrity, generosity of her time and knowledge.
Maureen had an effervescent personality, endearing, loyal, and compassionate. Selfless and caring to family and friends, work colleagues and her crew at TCM, who often relied on Maureen with trust to confide and seek advice, or fix a problem. Like her beautiful gardens, those lives she touched, Maureen wanted them to thrive and grow into their full potential.

The family would especially like to extend our love and thanks to Janessa Palm, Maureen's most beloved friend for her compassion with continually supporting Maureen throughout her brief illness. We are forever grateful.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, John (Jack) W. McCarthy of Magnolia; daughter, Jaclyn A. McCarthy of Danvers; her loving dog, Jackie O.; brother, Kevin E. Vieira and wife Kathleen of Magnolia; sister Taryn Slote and husband Stuart of Hinesburg, Vermont; and her four nephews, Jack, Max, and Clint Vieira of Magnolia, and Jarrett Slote of NYC; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Edward L. McCarthy Jr., in-laws Ann (Farrell) and Edward L. McCarthy Sr., all of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

At Maureen's request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 24, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 62 School Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a reception immediately following the service at the Manchester American Legion Club, 14 Church Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers, MA 01923, or Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
