AUGUSTA, ME: Michael Paul Mathieu, 65, of Rangeley, Maine, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at the Togus VA Medical Center. He was born in Kittery, Maine on April 29, 1950, a son of the late Paul A. & Mary R. (Durant) Mathieu. He attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School, Class of 1970. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. Michael was self employed, working as a carpenter and drywall contractor for most of his life. He also worked on many fishing boats out of Gloucester Harbor. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as wood crafting, reading, and playing cribbage. He is survived by his daughter, Aimee Favazza and her husband, Jason, and his son, Adam Mathieu, both of Gloucester, Mass. He also leaves behind a brother, Tim Mathieu and his wife, Diane of Windham; and two sisters, Paula Coppersmith and her husband, Bob of Windham, and Mary McDonald and her husband, Mike of South Portland; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Forest City Cemetery South Portland, Maine, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the VA New England Health Care Network at www.pay.gov/public/form/start/52253675/.
