GLOUCESTER: Nancy Knowlton Freeman, 99, of Gloucester, formerly of West Newton, died peacefully at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on March 30. She was born May 8, 1916, in Hamilton, Mass., to Douglas and Mae Schaller Knowlton. She graduated Valedictorian of her high school class, and continued her education at Salem Business School. She married John Rhodes in 1935. Nancy worked as the personal secretary for the wife of General Patton, taught piano lessons, and worked for the phone company as a switch board operator from 1945 to 1950. She remarried in 1950 to Laurence Freeman and moved that year to Newton, Mass. Nancy worked for Avon as a salesperson for over 25 years and won many Presidential Awards.
Nancy enjoyed writing letters, playing cards with her bridge club, visiting with her many friends and family, and attending her much loved Second Church in Newton. In her younger days, she liked to travel with her family throughout the United States and Canada, vacationing in Rockport and Cape Cod, and enjoyed playing the piano and singing. She found joy in taking care of her granddaughters and found comfort with her many dogs and granddogs over the years.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Laurence 0. Freeman; and her son-in-law, Thomas Rickert. She is survived by her daughter, Sally Rhodes Rickert of Boulder, Colo.; son, L. Douglas Freeman and his partner, James M. Gaetani of Provincetown; and daughter, Virginia Freeman Cohen and her husband, Dana of Gloucester, Mass. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rachel Cohen D'Orazio and her husband, Pino, their daughters, Silvana Grace and Olivia Mae D'Orazio of Reading, Mass., Laura D. Cohen of Baltimore, Md., Diane Rickert of Nebraska, and Jason Rickert and his son, Styler of Colorado.
A memorial service will be held at the Newton Cemetery Chapel on April 8, at 11 a.m., followed by a brief internment service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Second Church in Newton, 60 Highland Street, West Newton, MA 02465 or to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
