Peter's Story

GLOUCESTER: Peter A. Todd, 72, of Gloucester has passed away with his loving wife of 40 years Barbara (Webber) Todd and his family by his side.

Peter was born January 10, 1943, in Gloucester, son of the late Edward A. and Ida (Putaansuu) Todd and his step-mother Florence A. (Rust) Todd. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and attended Gloucester Schools.

He was a custodian at Gloucester City Hall for 18 years before retiring. After retiring from the City, he drove cab for Light House Taxi and Gloucester Taxi. As a young man Peter was a shoe shine boy on Main Street in Gloucester. He enlisted with the Merchant Marines. After returning from the Merchant Marines he owned and operated Petes Janitorial where he had an amazing reputation for his detail in waxing and refinishing floors.

He was named the Poet Laureate of the City of Gloucester in August 2014. He celebrated his love for everything Gloucester in his deeply personal and moving poems. His poems centered around such diverse topics as the Gloucester City Council, the City’s rich history, the fishing boats and working waterfront. Pete was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and was a Past Master of The Tyrian, Ashler, Acacia and Charles C. Dame Lodges. He was also a member of Lawrence United Lodge. Pete was awarded the Joseph Warren Distinguished Service Medal by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts for his dedication to the fraternity. Pete was a member of Aleppo Temple Shrine of North America. He and Barbara were former members of Martha Washington Chapter #21 Order of the Eastern Star and served as their Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. Peter also served as a member of the Advisory Board for Gloucester Assembly #41 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Peter had the most positive attitude towards life.

In addition to his loving wife, Barbara, Pete is survived by his daughter, Jenice C. Sawyer and her husband, Everett of Gloucester; his 12 siblings, Sylvia I. Stillman of Gloucester, Edward Todd and his wife, Bertha of Franklin, Maine, Russell Todd of New York, Linda M. Brown and her husband, Mark of Gloucester, Dennis Todd of Gloucester, Norman J. Hall of Gloucester, Kenneth E. Todd and his wife, Margie of Gloucester, Debra L. Todd of Gloucester, Michael Todd and his wife, Brenda of Gloucester, Ronnie D. Todd of Gloucester, Chris J. Todd and his wife, Deborah of Gloucester, Donna L. Allen and her husband, Rick of Essex; his devoted granddaughter, Ashley Dennis of New Hampshire; his two cherished great-grandchildren, Nathaniel J. Mosher and Daniel B. Mosher, both of Fall River and New Hampshire. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Richard A. “Richie” Todd.

Pete’s Funeral Service will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester, on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at 12(noon. Visiting hours will be in the Funeral Home on Friday evening from 3 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. There will be a Masonic Service Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery, West Gloucester.
