Phyllis A.'s Story
Phyllis A. (Sutera) Orlando, 92, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, June 23, 2017, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. She was the wife of the late Michael P. Orlando.
Phyllis was born in Boston on May 3, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Calogera (Ragusa) Sutera. She came to Gloucester as a young war bride, where she stayed for the remainder of her life.
Her favorite pastimes were bingo, traveling, spending winters in Florida for many years, entertaining, but especially hosting numerous sleepovers with her grandchildren. Her door was always open and the coffee pot always brewing. She spent many summers “up the cut” with her many girlfriends and commares. She had a flair for spectacular outfits and jewelry, always wearing her favorite color red or anything bedazzled.
She was a past member of the St. Peter’s Women’s Auxiliary and the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives, and a member of the Madonna Del Rosario Society.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph M. Orlando and his wife, Connie, and Vincent A. Orlando; son-in-law, John B. Novello; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marge Marino, Catherine (Kay) Orlando, Rita Sabella, Jenny Ciuffo, Lucille Bonfilio; one brother, Leo Sutera and his wife, Barbara; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughters, Lucille Morrissey and Lillian Novello; son-in-law, Joseph J. Morrissey; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Orlando; sisters, Beatrice Ciulla and Lucy Sutera; brothers, Ignazio Sutera and Philip Sutera.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Phyllis’ many caretakers but especially to the loving and caring staff of Seacoast Nursing and Rehab.
