R. David's Story

R. David Young of Lanesville passed away suddenly on Monday, September 18, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife, Esther (Bray) and their son, Randy.

David lived his entire life in Lanesville except for a couple years in Rockport and four years in the United State Air Force. David was a graduate of the Gloucester High School, Class of 1952. He and Esther enjoyed attending many of their class reunions.

David was the first carpenter hired by the construction company formed by Mike Feldman. He later partnered with Calvin Cook, known as Cook and Young. David and Cal worked on many homes on Cape Ann over the years. They were known for their excellent work.

David was a member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club where he enjoyed playing and participating in many tournaments. He was a good golfer and won a few times and served on its Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Rockport Golf Club.

David had an enriched and happy life. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in New Hampshire and Maine at Sebago, Rangeley, and Nicataus Lakes with his friends and especially with his son, Randy.
Dave was a member of the Elks Club, Past Commander of the Amvets, Sportmans Club, and the Edward Peterson Post 98 American Legion.

In later years, Dave, Randy and Esther would head south to Florida for the winter. They enjoyed their friends from the south and looked forward to seeing them each year.

David is survived by his wife, Esther, of almost 50 years and his son, Randy, both of Lanesville; sister, June Carlson Coakley, wife of Robert Coakley of Rockport; sisters-in-law, Nancy Wonson of Venice, Florida, Martha MacLean of Reading, Mass., Mary Young of Kittery, Maine; and special cousins, Aldena and Larry Lew of St. Peterbsurg, Fla. He also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Eleanor and George Young; brother, Fredrick Young; sister, Natalie Transue; father and mother-in law, Edwin and Fanny Bray; brothers-in-law, John Carlson, Jimmie Transue, Daniel MacLean, and Peter Wonson.
David’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 30, at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan St., Gloucester from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
