Ralph V. Stanton, Sr.

Gloucester - Ralph V. Stanton Sr. of Gloucester died peacefully May 2, 2018, at the hospice unit of Addison Gilbert Hospital following a short illness, with family by his side. He married Grace Randazza in 1950; they shared 66 years of marriage before her passing in January of 2017.
Born on November 28, 1922. He was the son of Ellard R. Stanton and Marguerite F. (Essbury) Stanton. Ralph was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduated GHS, class of 1941.
After high school, Ralph enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the U.S.S Monadnock from 1941–1943. His position was a coastal minelayer. Ralph was serving on this ship when it made an attempt to enter Gloucester Harbor during a storm. No harbor pilot was available, the skipper asked if anyone knew Gloucester harbor. Ralph brought the vessel into the harbor safely to anchor during the storm. In 1943, Ralph served on the U.S.S Spear as an Auk-Class Minesweeper. In May 1944, the U.S.S Spear joined a convoy carrying troops and supplies to the Marshall Islands. By December, 1944, they were on anti-submarine patrol in the middle of the Pacific operations. He ended his Navy career as Boatswain's Mate First Class USNR V6. All nine Stanton brothers served their country in the U.S. military. His brother Fred gave his life while serving overseas.
Ralph was employed by Mass Electric as a linesman for over 30 years until his retirement in 1984.
Ralph enjoyed taking his many grandchildren for walks to the boulevard. He enjoyed watching the boats at the cut bridge and feeding the pigeons with all of them.
Ralph is survived by his nine children, Margaret, Ralph Jr. and wife Lola, David and wife Karen, William and wife Mary Beth, Sandra, Paula, Michael and wife Jeanne, Janet and husband Steve, Linda and companion Peter.
He was the grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather to 13.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ralph was predeceased by all of his 12 siblings, brothers Robert, James, Fred, Richard, Thomas, Alfred, Charles and Wayne and sisters Grace Munroe, Marion Gilbert, Calvie Stanton and Marguerite Stanton. He was also predeceased by special cousins, Tom, Jack, Don, and George Ramos.
Ralph's graveside service will be Friday May 11, 2018, in Beechbrook Cemetery, Essex Ave., Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. For online condolences and register book, please visit www.pikenewhall.com.
