Robert's Story

GLOUCESTER- Mr. Robert Elliott McKechnie, 91, of Gloucester passed away on Thursday morning, January 25, 2018 in Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Catherine M. "Kay" (Friend) McKechnie with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Robert was born June 10, 1926 in Gloucester. Son of the late F. Elliott and Helen (Martin) McKechnie. Robert was a lifelong resident of Gloucester as well as a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1944.
After graduating from High School at age 17 Robert entered the military. He enlisted in the United States Army/Airforce to fight in the war. He served during WW II and held the rank of Sergeant serving with the 43rd Bombardment Group and the Lucky Dice Squadron.
After being honorably discharged from the Army/Airforce, Robert began his career with New England Telephone and Telegraph. He started as a Lineman and worked his way to Supervisor. Robert worked 37 years before retiring in 1982.
He and Kay were long time members of the Gloucester Elks Lodge 892 as well as an active member at Trinity Congregational Church for 75 + years and served as Deacon Emeritus at the Church. Robert was also a member of the Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Masonic Lodge AF & AM and served as Master of The Tyrian Lodge in 1979. He was a member of the Aleppo Shrine. He served as District Deputy Grand Secretary in 1986 and 1987 and was on the Advisory Board for the Gloucester Assembly # 41 Rainbow Girls. He was a former member at Bass Rocks Golf Club.
He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, William E. McKechnie and his wife, Sharron (Yates) of Ellsburg Township, Minn., Robert W. McKechnie and his wife, Jennifer (John) of Hudson, OH and David S. McKechnie and his wife, Elaine (Poole) of Gloucester; his six grandchildren, Mariah McKechnie-Fadziewicz and her husband, Nick, Kaitlyn Nelson and her husband, Scott, E. Drew McKechnie and his wife, Rebecca, R. Derek McKechnie and his wife, Sara, Connor T. McKechnie and Ryan S. McKechnie. His five great grandchildren, twins Lily and Josie Fadziewicz, Saydee Lynn Nelson, Bodie Nelson and Eleanora McKechnie; his sister-in-law, Eleanor McKechnie of Gloucester as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his loving wife, Kay and his parents, Robert was predeceased by his brother, Frederick McKechnie.
Robert's Funeral Service will be in the Trinity Congregational Church, 70 Middle St., Gloucester, on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11 a.m. His visiting hours will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St. Gloucester on Sunday, January 28, 2018, from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be a Masonic Service in the Funeral Home on Sunday at 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
