Rolf Stuart Reed, of Rockport and Byfield, and North Kingstown, R.I., died at his home in North Kingstown on July 13, 2017, after a long illness.
He was born in 1943 to Martha I. and John F. Reed, and educated at public schools in West Hartford and Wethersfield, Conn. He attended Worcester Academy and Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., before completing his bachelor's degree at Mansfield State College, Mansfield, Pa. For many years, Rolf was employed by the Department of Transitional Assistance for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In the last decade of his career, he was an operator of the Andrew Gillis Bridge between Newburyport and Salisbury. A rabid Red Sox fan and avid sailor, Rolf loved all things Cape Ann, especially Rockport and Pigeon Cove. Rolf and his wife, Laura, treasured precious hours aboard their "Bel Canto." He was an unpretentious man of few words and simple tastes and a gentleman in the basic sense of the word - a gentle man. Rolf was stoic to a fault, including when he received his final, grim prognosis from physicians at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester. Something of a gourmet, his elegant clam chowder would have made the noted chef, George Ramsden, smile. As a young man, he was an accomplished somnambulist. His nocturnal migrations provoked much merriment by the family. He had a way with animals, who trusted his warm, gentle manner. He loved his house pets and they loved him, fervently.
He leaves his wife, Laura (Driscoll); a son, Benjamin S. Reed of Anchorage, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Heather Goddard of Los Angeles; stepchildren, Cris and Laura Driscoll, and Caitlin and Mike Cannon, all of Roslindale; grandchildren, Dylan, Kieran, and Mason Driscoll, and Declan Cannon, all of Roslindale; dear in-laws, Nancy Gillies and family of Long Island, N.Y.; six siblings, John F. Reed of Rockport, James R. Reed and his wife, Barbara of Rockport, Stephen D. Reed and his wife, Kathleen of Quincy, Robert H. Reed and his wife, Sue Anne of Marblehead, Jonathan I. Reed and his wife, Sandra of East Lansing, Mich., and Abigail S. Feller and her husband, Robert of Lewisburg, Pa.; many cousins, including Bruce R. Reed and his wife, Mary of Rockport, Donald S. Reed of Annisquam, and Christine R. Fearing and her husband, Kenneth of Long Boat Key, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed.
Rolf had a memorial service at his home in Rhode Island days before his death, attended by family and friends.
