Gloucester - Rose D. (Souza) Stuart, a lifelong resident of Gloucester, passed away late Sunday evening, June 9, 2019, at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. She was the beloved wife of the late Jay W. Stuart. Rose was the daughter of the late Frank G. and Frances (Azevedo) Souza.
Rose was a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1957. She married her high school sweetheart which she met at a Valentine's Day dance. She worked as a bookkeeper with "early computers" as she referred to them until deciding to be a stay at home mother with her children, Michael and Deborah. Rose's immediate and extended family meant everything to her.
Rose was an active member of Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish for her entire life. She grew up on Taylor Street and loved the Portuguese Blessing of the Fleet and the Religious Processions of her youth. When she was a teenager, she belonged to the Junior Legion of Mary. After starting a family she focused on her husband and children. She devoted her time to raising her children in the faith she so dearly loved. Until becoming ill, she attended daily Mass. She had a deep love of god and a deep faith. She would pray daily, the Rosary and in her later years it seemed that her Rosary would never leave her hand.
Rose loved gardening, especially flowering plants and enjoyed the birds and animals that frequently visited her yard. She loved traveling with her family, especially her trip to Tahiti with her husband, her trip to Fatima, Portugal with her husband and daughter, and also loved her trip to the Azores, the Island so dear to her because of her heritage. She will be greatly missed by her daughter and extended family.
Rose is survived by her daughter, Deborah Stuart; her sisters-in-law, Linda McDonald, Phillipina Souza; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Jay Stuart; her son, Michael Stuart; her brothers, Claude Souza, Anthony Souza; and her sister, Sr. Mary Souza, RSM.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There will be no visiting hours and the burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester, following the Mass.
