Russell's Story

DANVERS, MA: Russell "Russ" Arthur Shields passed away peacefully on March 30, 2016, with his daughter, Dianna by his side at the Kaplan House Hospice in Danvers, after suffering from a stroke.

Russ was born in Gloucester on October 6, 1930 to Harry and Mabel Crouse Shields. Russ grew up in Gloucester, graduating from Gloucester High School in 1948. Following high school he worked as a local fisherman, fishing with his father and brothers. In 1951, he married his wife, Anne Zarella Shields. They had 65 years of marriage together. Also in 1951, Russ entered the U.S. Army, working as skipper on a tugboat during the Korean War, stationed in France. He reached the rank of Corporal.

Upon returning to Gloucester after his service to his country, he continued fishing until 1957, when he began working for his brother-in-law, Donald Lowe, as a carpenter. He then went into business for himself in 1967, building many homes, banks, and restaurants in and around the North Shore area; Amongst his favorite projects, was building the Calvary Baptist Church on Washington Street. After his retirement Russ enjoyed working on small projects in his workshop, tending to his garden, and delving into his many interests and hobbies and most important to him, was spending time with his family.

Russell is survived by his wife, Anne, and his children, Linda and her husband, David Swicker of Ipswich, Dianna Shields Benson, and her partner, Farrell Sutherland of Gloucester, John and his wife, Gail Shields of Hamilton, James Shields of Beverly, and William and his wife, Nancy Shields of Gloucester; his siblings, Madeline Shields Parsons of Gloucester, and Isabel Shields Lowe of Florida; his grandchildren, Benjamin and Andrew Swicker, Kyle and Autumn Benson, Brian and Marc Shields, Jennifer O’Leary and Christopher Shields.

Russell was predeceased by his parents, and his four brothers, John, James and Richard Madruga, and William (Snook) Shields, as well has his son-in-law, Russell Arthur Benson.
