West Orange, NJ - Ruth P. (Saari) DeLorenzo, 92, passed on July 3, 2019, at the Daughters of Israel LTC, after a long, full life. A daughter of the late Waino and Estelle (Moulton) Saari, Ruth was born on March 24,1927, and reared in Rockport, Mass. She attended the Rockport Public Schools, and began working in local shops at a young age; waitressing at Johnny's Restaurant on Main St. put her in a prime spot to know all the town news; she enjoyed retelling the tales of the old-timers who stepped in for a daily mug up, and also of her innocent hi-jinks with childhood friends Ginny Rowe and Muriel Day.
Ruth married Hannibal DeLorenzo in 1946, settling with him in his native New Jersey where she remained until her passing. Together they raised four children in West Orange, N.J., then a growing suburb with housing made ready for returning servicemen. Later as a single mother, Ruth was a longtime employee at nearby Turtle Back Zoo; work never interfered with childcare for her beloved grandchildren Shannon Intili (Antonio), Nick McCormick, Jesse and Taylor Deltz, Jameson and Elizabeth Burke, and Frank DeLorenzo in their infancy and early years.
Ruth was gifted with common sense, a keen perception of self and others, humor, Finnish sisu, an agile mind, independent spirit, fortitude, and an indomitable strength and wisdom that guided herself and many others through life's challenges.
Ruth will remain in the hearts and memories of daughters Kathy McCormick (James), Donna Deltz (William), Sarina Burke; and son Anthony DeLorenzo (Lorraine); her seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters Frankie and Nikki Intili, all in N.J.; her sister Kathryn E. Bull, San Pedro, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; former husband Hannibal, with Ruth during her last days; and all who loved her and whose lives she touched. She was predeceased by her parents.
According to her wishes, there are no funeral services. Following cremation, a private burial is planned at a later date in Rockport.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the Lombardi Funeral Home, 9 Smull Ave., Caldwell, NJ 07006.
