S. Elaine's Story

Text size

Sylvia Elaine (Tate) Del Torchio, wife of the late Russell Del Torchio, has passed on after a brief illness with her loved ones by her side. She was born in Salem, Mass., on July 3, 1931, to Lawson F. and Gertrude (Hoyt) Tate. Mrs. Del Torchio was a graduate of Gloucester High School and attended the Conservatory of Music in Boston. Elaine was very fashion conscious in her youth and delighted in modeling during fashion shows from designer shops and boutiques at the Easterly Inn on the back shore. She and her husband, Russ, were members of Gloucester Skippers Square Dancing Club. She was also a committee member for the Class of 1949 reunions. She was a lifelong member of the Addison Gilbert Hospital Auxiliary and on the Board of Directors in 1987. She was honored to be the Commander of the Alumni Drill Team for Outstanding Achievement at the 100th Anniversary of the ROTC at Gloucester High School. Mrs. Del Torchio was an avid sports fan. She attended her children's and grandchildren's athletic events for high school and college. She was a nanny for many years for a wonderful boy, Nicholas McCracken. Elaine was beloved by both family and friends for her generosity, kindness and sense of humor. Her wonderful stories entertained them all for many years. Elaine's greatest treasure in her twilight years was her family. Her happiest hours were sitting on her waterfront deck with family and friends enjoying a glass of wine.
Elaine was a loving mother who adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Sandra Del Torchio, wife of Richard Simon; Leigh Del Torchio and her companion, Scott Cook; Terri Del Torchio and her companion, Craig Hillier; Skip and his wife, Dawn of Newbury; and Steve and his wife, Stephanie. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, Khristopher Silveria and wife, Jessica; Trevor Silveria and wife, Denise; Alexis Adair and husband, Stephen; Ashley and Annika Walima; Deidre Henry and fiance, Michael Center; Deana Tate and husband, Jason; Darla Del Torchio; Stephen Del Torchio and wife, Kimberly; Lindsay and Amy Del Torchio; her 15 great-grandchildren, Sophia and Jack Silveria; Braden, Bryce and Brody Silveria; Connor Henry; Abigail, Ethan and Adrian Tate; Cora and Camilla Adair; Allison, Electra and Russell Del Torchio; and Gabrielle McQueeney.
Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Russell; sister, Shirley Dean; and brother, Harley Tate and his wife, Joyce. She leaves behind her niece, Paula Hart, who is like her fourth daughter; as well as two beloved cousins, Holly Steiss and Judy Stearns. Elaine leaves a sister-in-law, Ruth Del Torchio; many nieces and nephews; along with some very dear friends, Jan and Fred Hyman, Ruth and Mel Olson and Paula Hudson.
