Beverly - Sandra Susan (Burgess) Chmiel, passed away peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on Sunday, April 7th, 2019 after a long courageous battle with C.O.P.D.
Sandy was born in Gloucester on February 16th, 1953 and was the daughter of the late Harold and Janice Burgess. Sandy graduated from Gloucester High School, Class of 1972, and from there attended Montsserat College of Art.
Sandy had been employed at the United Shoe, Tadco, Gorton's and as an adolescent, a deckhand on a lobster boat. Sandy had a great passion for drawing, painting, baking, gardening, and fishing. She also was an incredible athlete in her time at GHS playing softball and was also captain of the varsity basketball team.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 23 years, Richard Chmiel, her daughter, Kristen Burnham, her son, Douglas Burnham, and grandson, Robert Steach, her sister, Janet Casey and her husband, Tom and many other family members. She was predeceased by her sister, Christine (Burgess) Bernard.
We will all miss her sense of humor, her smiling blue eyes, and her warm, loving hugs. God took another angel home. "It's not goodbye, it's see you later."
Sandy graciously donated her body to Tufts School of Medicine and requested not to have any services. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Lung Association. Online condolences at

I haven't seen Sandy for years but I remember her from high school and later, and how nice she always was to me. The type that would be first to say something funny with her hello.
