Scott B. Thompson

July 02, 1987 - November 22, 2018

Scott B. Thompson Beverly Farms - Scott Barclay Thompson, passed away on November 22, 2018. He was 31. Scott was born in Boston on July 2, 1987, to Donald and Cecilia Thompson of Beverly Farms, Mass.
Scott’s dry wit, insatiable appetite for learning, creativity, and generosity will be missed by all who knew him. We will miss conversations with Scott and his spot-on observations on current events and issues. We also will remember his amazing courage in his decade-long battle with depression and substance abuse disorder, so that his illness would not define him.
Scott knew at an early age that he wanted to work in the restaurant industry. An after-school job in his teens exposed Scott to the inner workings and tempo of life in a restaurant kitchen. His career aspirations were also influenced, in part, by his late great-grandfather who owned several restaurants and hotels.
After studying Hospitality & Tourism Management at UMass Amherst, he mastered his culinary craft in restaurants on the North Shore, Rhode Island, and Maine. He worked his way up the line to the position of sous chef. Among the local restaurants he was associated with were The Franklin, Singing Beach Club, and Cygnet.
He promoted the farm-to-table movement, and created a YouTube series called “Prep to Plate” to give viewers an inside look at cooking techniques and restaurant-quality recipes. Scott also enjoyed cooking for large family gatherings.
He was well read, with Kurt Vonnegut among his favorite writers. He was gifted in languages, and could speak and write Spanish fluently. Scott also enjoyed sports. He played youth hockey in Beverly, and would practice for hours with his friends on a homemade rink in the backyard.
As an accomplished sailor, Scott loved both the serenity and exhilaration of being on his sailboat in Cape Ann waters. He set sail for the first time when he took lessons at the Manchester Sailing Association. He was the captain of the varsity sailing team at Saint John’s Prep in his senior year; and continued to race in college—where he was captain of the sailing team. He shared his passion for sailing by teaching at Sail Maine in Portland, Maine.
Scott is survived by his parents; his brother, John Thompson of Atlanta, Ga.; his grandmother, Michelina Abele of Lexington, Mass.; aunts, uncles, and cousins in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Virginia, and Texas; a great-aunt in Argentina, and his German Shepherd, “Otto.”
A memorial service will be held at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 705 Hale St., Beverly Farms, MA, on December 9, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made in Scott’s name to Milestone Recovery ( or Sail Maine ( Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly.
