Therese "Tess" (Powers) Phinney passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on January 18, 2017, at Care One Essex Park in Beverly after an extended illness. Mrs. Phinney was the wife of the late Walter W. Phinney, who died on August 19, 2015. They shared 68 years of marriage.

Tess was born in Boston on November 8, 1927, to Mary H. (McCarthy) and William B. Powers. She grew up in Burlington and Woburn and graduated from Woburn High School in 1945. Walter and Tess were childhood sweethearts. After the war they married and started their family. In 1959, Tess and Walter moved to Gloucester where they raised their large family. Tess attended nursing school for many years. Becoming first an LPN and a RN and then receiving her BSN from Emmanuel College. She was registered nurse at Addison Gilbert Hospital for over 25 years. She worked as a cardiac nurse in the ICU and was the Director of Patient Care Services and the Education Dept. After retiring from AGH, she worked at the Cape Ann Medical Center and for city of Gloucester for their flu clinics. She taught nursing courses at Endicott College and through PRN services. Mrs Phinney served on the board at Children's Friend and Family Services in Salem for many years and was the president of the board from 1990 to 1995.

Mrs. Phinney took care of everyone, her patients, her children, her husband when he became so ill, the neighbors, and anyone who needed a helping hand. Her compassion for others was evident in everything she did. Tess was always in charge. She loved being a nurse. She loved traveling. Tess and Walter took many trips to Ireland, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland to see family, and they traveled by car across the U.S. She visited the Holy Land with her friend, Ginger and had trips to Spain and Morocco. Tess loved playing bridge, cooking, painting, and mostly entertaining her large family for Sunday dinners. She adored her grandchildren, and it was her delight to babysit for them.
