Virginia L. "Ginny"'s Story
Mrs. Virginia L. “Ginny” Atkinson of Rockport, Mass., passed away on Saturday evening, July 9, 2016. Ginny was born in Malden, Mass., on July 3, 1935. She grew up in Malden and attended college at Bridgewater State University, where she earned her degree in Education. Ginny was a Special Education teacher at the Tarr School in Rockport for many years. She had a passion for learning and was beloved by her students. She was a published author of poetry and an active member of the Rockport Congregational Church. She is remembered as loving life, nature, music, reading, and especially her family and friends. As a woman of faith she believed that they shall all meet again but by the grace of God. Ginny was a long-time resident and lover of Rockport.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Donald Atkinson; her children, Richard and his wife, Judy of Atlanta, Ga.; Donald and his wife, Lisa of Flemington, N.J.; Glen and his wife, Jody of West Roxbury, Mass.; Mark and his wife, Dawn of Rockport, Mass.; her daughter-in-law, Kelly Atkinson of Hingham, Mass.; and her grandchildren, Emily, Hailey, Ryan, Lauren, Matthew, Elizabeth, Connor, and Sean.
Her Funeral Service will be held in the Rockport Congregational Church on Thursday, July 14, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Derek van Gulden officiating. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA, will be held on Wednesday, July 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. The burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the ministries of the First Congregational Church of Rockport, 12 School St, Rockport, MA 01966.
