GLOUCESTER: William A. Smith Sr., 85, of Gloucester, husband of Rose Marie (Orlando) Smith, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington. Bill was born in Gloucester on January 14, 1931, the son of the late Joseph W. and Doris (Lowe) Smith. He graduated from Gloucester High School, Class of 1949 and received his degree in engineering at Northeastern University. He worked at Raytheon in Bedford, retiring in 1992. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bill and Rose spent time traveling the country during their devoted marriage. You would rarely find them separated. He loved country music and one of his favorite stops was Nashville. He relished their road trips to Foxwoods and around New England. While at home he enjoyed family dinners and his daily newspapers and crossword puzzles with his best friend, Penny, his cat of 17 years, right alongside him. He was the former Grand Knight Ruler for the Knights of Columbus, where he was an active member for over 35 years, as well as being a lifetime member and a trustee of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks #892. Bill was a kind and gentle man who was devoted to his family, friends, church and community. He received the greatest joy just knowing his family was happy. He would do anything for them and loved when they were all together. He will forever be admired, loved and greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife with whom he would have celebrated their 60th anniversary in May, Rose Marie; his four children, Doreen (Sawyer) Mailloux and her husband, Edward, William Smith Jr. and his wife, Amy, Kevin Smith and his fiance, Kanitah Conley and Deanna Thompson and her husband, Kevin, all of Gloucester; 15 grandchildren, his very special granddaughter who was an enormous source of laughter and support to him, Jennifer Thompson and her fiance, Dominic Napoli, Krystina Sawyer and her fiance, Robert Cuomo, Michael Sawyer, Courtney, Taylor and Meagan Smith, Jacqueline, Victoria, Madison, Rylee, Teagan and Tanner Smith, Shelly, Brendan and Paige Thompson; four great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Ariana Napoli, Thatcher Cuomo and Julian Smith; one brother, David Smith and his wife Helen of Gloucester; along with many loving nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.
