Alice M.'s Story

Text size

Alice M. (Brewer) Gosselin, 88, of Gloucester, wife of the late Albert D. Gosselin, passed away at her home with her family at her side on Sunday morning, March 19, 2017. Alice was born in Boston, Mass., on October 31, 1928, the daughter of the late Clifford H. and Lucy (Gilman) Smith Brewer. She graduated from Newton High School and got a job at Smith Corona, where she helped her dad procure his first typewriter. She also worked for GE as a secretary before working for the Boyd Corp. While there, Alice became the first lady to demonstrate the new microwave oven in the Jordan Marsh Co. store. Her daughter, Diane thought that her mom was a “magician” as the apple pie that was cooked in the microwave was piping hot but the ice cream on top was still cold! Diane remembers a favorite bedtime story, “The Chosen Baby” that her mother never tired of reading to her as she was an adoptive child. She loved playing cards with her Thursday night “club” in Lynn, as well as camping for many years in Florida and traveling the country. She saw, along with her daughter, places like Death Valley, Yosemite National Park, where they watched the now defunct “Firefall” while on a trip to California. Just recently, she went to the Shenandoah Caverns in Virginia, as well as the Ice Castles in northern New Hampshire, where they put her wheelchair on a sled and pulled her around. She was an amazing cook, concocting corn chowders, spaghetti sauce, fried chicken and Thanksgiving dinners. As her grandson would say, “I would eat anything that Grandma makes!” She is being missed by her daughter and her family. She is survived by her daughter, Diane of Gloucester, who was her caregiver; her grandchildren, Bethany Saxton and her husband, Jon of Charlestown, Mass., and their children, Aly, Aliyah, Anthony and Natalie, Carissa Stewart and her husband, Kevin of Littleton, N.H., and their child, Levi; Timothy Sharpe and Bastian Mazza of Gloucester; a brother, Clifford “Harry” Brewer of California; nieces, Sally Brewer of Nevada, Sheri Brewer of Oklahoma; and a nephew, Roger Brewer of California; cousins, Norman and Sally Soney, Donna and David Langley, all of Dover, N.H.; Rachel and Alan Soney of St. Louis, Mo.; Carol and David Pittman of Nottingham, N.H.; and a special cousin, Karen Watts of Belmont, Mass.; as well as cousins, Iver And Johanna Peterson of Oxford, Mass.; a niece, Sandra and her husband, Raymond Mears of Saugus, Mass.; many other cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as many friends from the Lynn Congregational Church in Lynn, Mass., and Big Tree Campgrounds in Florida. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert; a brother, Richard Smith; a granddaughter, Melinda Sharpe; and her stepmom, Bertha Brewer.
Her visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester on Saturday, March 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. Following the visiting hour, a service will take place in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
